It is reluctant to change up, and keeps the revs higher. The model we have here, however, could well be the pick of that line-up. And it's just not Ford but other manufacturers too. Drop your next pizza crust behind the cushion, instant doubling of value. But there are some exceptions. The is a more expensive feeling product, even if the prices are quite similar. The dashboard is slim, which creates a more spacious feel in the front.

It was sensible, practical and affordable, but also handled with a fluidity that some significantly more expensive cars struggled to emulate, and engaged the driver in a way few of its rivals - nimble Peugeot 306 excepted - could match. Life with a Ford Focus: Month 2 The housing development I live on was built in the mid-1960s, something you can tell by the design of the houses — and the size of the on-street parking bays. The overall body shape is sleeker than the outgoing car, with softer, smoother lines. Take the the Driver Assistance Pack as an example. The noticeable downsizing comes with the boot width: you might struggle to get a set of golf clubs in it, and if your buggy is on the larger side that too could be an issue. Also, rivals are fairly hard to find.

The lack of alloy wheels and interesting styling make it a slightly dismal option. If you're going to critise the placement of full stops don't go putting one after a? With it you get adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist. Good job then that this new Focus has the substance to back up its style. The electric power steering is direct and fairly firm at the rim, which helps give the car a dependable feeling of directional stability, only made better by the ideal way the effort builds up away from the straight-ahead, a characteristic Ford feeling that smacks of painstaking development and plenty of prior experience. Petrol is where the party is really happening though, the tried and tested 3-cylinder 1.

Good job really, because this was the area where the old car felt most dated. Cars tend to get bigger from generation to generation, a trend that applies far beyond Ford. It will also be interesting to see how this new Ford Focus fares with depreciation, given a higher base price and lengthier options list. The Focus is a rather spec-sensitive car; it can look a bit dowdy and dull in some of the lower trims — especially in one of the less inspiring colours. This makes the new Ford Focus an easy car to live with. The plastics are soft-touch, with a nice variety of textures and finishes. It's hard to think of a better option in this semi-fast class.

The only thing missing, in our opinion, is a digital instrument cluster. The third cylinder can re-engage in 14 milliseconds, helping it to achieve up to 60 mpg. Finished in Desert Island Blue, our test car was a real head-turner. Most are pricier and more powerful than this semi-sporting choice. It is slightly more expensive than the Ford, but we think the extra equipment and luxury is worth it. Only drawback is this Focus feels unnecessarily big. But this also puts the gearbox into sport mode. The snappy six-speed manual gearbox and steering are both perfectly weighted, while the seating position is spot on. It corners reasonably flat, thanks to that low, broad body shape. The chassis is the real pleasure though. If you want to make it that simple, we could just point right at the Audi A3, but this car is almost in a different league, and is certainly targeting more affluent buyers.

A Massive Review of the Ford Focus ST

The benefit of that is you get that sporty look but without the harsher ride quality, and the Focus is already a fine handling car, so it feels like a good setup for the power that this car has. Prices for the Focus Estate are typically £1,100 more than the hatchback, with the cheapest wagon — the Style — kicking off the range at £19,400. The chunky flat-bottomed steering wheel encourages you to throw the car into some corners. We prefer the extra punch the 1. So in the 1990s you could have around 8-10 mid range Ford Escorts for the price of a S Class while today you can only get 4 Ford Focuses.

Not laugh-out-loud, spring-out-of- bed-at-4am fun, but certainly change-up- a-bit-later, lift-off-mid-corner-to-see-what- happens fun. This will be especially noticeable for taller adults. It may not have the performance credentials of the 1. But the way it drives should also endear it to people like us. The new body looks wider. But the second most popular is another option by Ford, the Focus family hatchback. The previous generation Focus was frankly a bland choice aimed at people who needed a car to get from , and although was solid and reliable, was very hard to recommend overall with competition so strong.
